ChatGPT Pro: Is It Worth Your $200/mo?

Finding out who needs the most advanced OpenAI subscription

So, the first announcement within 12 Days of OpenAI was the ChatGPT Pro subscription for $200/mo. Users immediately started testing the features of the chatbot and discussing what results could be achieved with the o1 reasoning model.

But is it worth it, or can you get by with Plus for $20/mo? Let's get to the bottom of it.

In this issue:

What is ChatGPT Pro | Comparison with Plus

ChatGPT Pro is a new $200/mo subscription tier. According to Sam Altman, it’s the best OpenAI has to offer. ChatGPT Pro primarily aims at advanced creators, developers, researchers, and other professionals.

I suggest we compare it to the Plus subscription.

Here's what you get with each of them:

The key difference (well, besides cost) is access to the full version of the o1 model and usage limits. The new AI is better than its predecessors: it solves complex real-world questions well, quickly analyzes large amounts of data, and, as they say in OpenAI, easily handles complex math problems.

At the same time, o1 pro mode checks its own answers as tasks are completed, making the model the most robust AI on the market. In addition, ChatGPT Pro users get the highest priority. Regardless of workload and time, OpenAI promises to provide its subscribers unlimited access to all subscription-enabled models. In addition, the new tier will exclusively receive all the latest features from OpenAI in the future.

A minor limitation here is that o1 pro reasoning requires extra time, so if speed is more important than accuracy, you should use the simpler GPT-4o, also available in the Plus & Pro subscriptions.

First Use Cases of ChatGPT Pro

We could cite benchmarks where the o1 pro mode beats competitors and other OpenAI models to show the power. But this is rather boring. Let's instead see how this AI copes with quite real creators' tasks.

Fortunately, many such examples have accumulated on X over the last few days.

Coinbase Clone with One Prompt

Popular AI creator Mckay Wrigley tested o1 pro mode right after its release. To find out how good it is at coding, Wrigley took a screenshot of a page on Coinbase and asked four models, including o1, to clone the website. Three of them (whose names the creator doesn't mention) could have done better, while ChatGPT Pro created a visually excellent product.

Introductions:

And the result:

Here is the prompt that was used to clone Coinbase:

I need you to create a next.js page that looks exactly like this (single page.tsx file)

Develop Game in Minutes With o1 pro mode & Midjourney

Entrepreneur Kevin Kern decided to test how well the new AI copes with creating full-fledged games. To do so, he used the following things:

  • ChatGPT Pro with one prompt
  • Midjourney
  • Bolt.new (an AI-powered platform for full-stack app development)

And after a couple of tries, the creator got a simple but working variation of Metroid.

Here's a full prompt you can use to replicate his result:

write a metroid like 2d pixel game in phaser where you navigate a hero.

Controls:
W - Left
D - Right
K - Shoot Gun
Space - Jump

Level is made of tilemap.png and it fits the whole screen
Character is hero.png
And enemy is enemy.png

Game Mechanics:
Enemy spawns from right and targets towards player to hit him.
player loves one life if enemy hits
player can shoot at enemy and enemy loses lifes.
if enemy is killd a point will increas in the hud which is on top right will appear.

Sometimes health bars drop like randomy all 20-30 seconds

Important:
I need a variable for the Y Axis of the player + enemies (GROUND_Y).
And a Variable for the bullet X and Y variables

Sound: The game has also a music

soundtrack.mp3 / or wav
Laser.aac / or wav

Hud:
You can start the game with Enter
Restart with r

Goal:
Kill as much enemies as possible.

Quick Coding Flowcharts

Another popular creator, Allie K. Miller, decided to test how well o1's image input capabilities work. To do this, she attached a chatbot, attached a flowchart, and asked the AI to write code for what was drawn on the picture.

ChatGPT Pro did the job with ease.

Although Miller admitted that the code itself wasn't perfect.

Superior Skills for Math Problems

Now, for more applied tasks, the o1 pro mode was developed. Tigran Sloyan, co-founder and CEO of the startup CodeSignal, has checked how well ChatGPT Pro copes with solving highly complex math problems. He asked GPT a question from IMO 2006. The AI analyzed the query and found the correct answer in just 6 minutes and 48 seconds.

No other model, including the basic o1, could give the correct answer.

As Sloyan pointed out, in 2006, out of about 500 top math kids under 19, only 28 could solve the problem completely. And it took them about 4.5 hours.

Here's what the o1 pro reasoning process looked like:

Who Needs ChatGPT Pro?

So, it's time to answer the question, “Who needs ChatGPT Pro?”.

While studying different usage scenarios and cases of ChatGPT Pro, I kept going from “you must subscribe right now” to “you should skip it.” And as is often the case, the answer lies in the middle.

Target Audience for ChatGPT Pro

  • Professionals in Research & Development

Researchers, engineers, and data analysts who rely on high-level AI capabilities to solve problems will benefit greatly from ChatGPT Pro. The o1 pro mode is well-optimized for accuracy and reliability in data science, programming, and case law analysis.

  • Businesses and Enterprises

Companies that need to integrate AI into their operations for tasks like customer support, content generation, or data analysis can also leverage the enhanced computational power.

  • Tech Enthusiasts

Of course, we cannot ignore this group. Enthusiasts who want to build applications that utilize advanced AI features or test the latest technological advances will find unlimited access to the latest OpenAI models extremely gratifying.

The o1 pro mode actually feels like a game-changer. But it's a game-changer for those whose lives are already firmly rooted in AI. If you're a developer, entrepreneur, or researcher whose work involves big data and solving complex problems, you should try it.

I think you should listen to Altman's opinion. With the release of ChatGPT Pro, he didn't push hard for a new subscription tier, stating instead that “most users will be very happy with o1 in the plus tier”. And it's hard to argue with that.

As for my personal experiences and plans, I see no reason to pay 10x more for a better subscription tier. At least for now. ChatGPT Plus handles quick information analysis and word processing really well. However, if I decide to implement a complex project, the Pro subscription will be one of my first expenses.
